Asher Pacey shot on Stab Full Frame

I ran into the long grass behind Keramas after surfing to get a line-up shot. Asher Pacey caught this wave and I snapped this sniper style shot and sent it to Stab magazine. They ran it as a “Full Frame”. Click the image below to check it out.

I was really surprised to see Asher riding a totally blank board. His surfing was world class this day, when I was in the water I saw him get 2 of the most amazing barrels. I wanted to talk to him after the surf to see what was up with his sponsors (or lack of) but he cracked himself in the nuts on his last wave and seemed to be in a lot of pain, so I didn’t think it was a good time to bother him.

I got home from Indonesia last week. I went on holiday and didn’t shoot a lot of photos, mostly just surfing with my girl Karen, but we did get a few holiday snaps.

I haven’t updated this website for almost a year. What happened? Well I had a pretty radical lifestyle change. Opened a bar called Major Toms here is Mt Maunganui. It soaked up a lot of my time and I didn’t even shoot a single photo for 4 months. But now I’m on top of things, my days are free and I’m back shooting from time to time. I’ve got some good stuff sitting in my hard drive, try and dig some out soon.

I put this selection of photos together a couple of years back. They were some of my favorite line-ups at the time. Some I no longer like, most I probably would have shot differently now, but all are of pretty good surf so worth a peep.

I’ve always thought it would be possible to get a sick sunset shot at Raglan. This day was cloudy, but the sun busted through for about 5 minutes. That’s plenty of time when you’re shooting with someone like Luke. He makes magic happen on pretty much any wave, so I just had to make sure I nailed it.

I sent this in to Stab, so they could write about Luke shooting for his Innersection part. Unfortunately they dredged up Flynn Novak drama, but that’s Stab’s style and why we love them I guess. Click the image below to check it out.

Jay and I went to the Island the other day. He borrowed Maz’s ski and for the first time in my life I didn’t have to drag all my camera gear down the beach. It didn’t all go smoothly though, I fell off the back of the ski in the shorey and gave my imitation pelican case a good test. There was a rotting dolphin on the beach right in front of the main peak. Turns out it was the famous Moko. I sent a shot to Stab and they ran it as a “Full Frame” with a pretty good spiel about Moko. Click the photo below to check it out.

I just completed a lap of the North Island for work. Seeing how it was the 3rd one I’ve done in 6 months it was pretty boring, but stopping to take the occasional photo kept me sane.

The Wave Box

I checked out the Wave Box website a couple of weeks back and almost everything had been taken down, just a coming soon opening page and an ability to sign up to email updates. All the cheesy graphics and claiming how rad it was going to be were gone and also they had removed the option of paying $1000 for a lifetime pass. The promo vid is still up on youtube complete with Nu-Metal style sound track. Lets go!

The Wave Box was originally scheduled to open in December this year so while in Auckland this week I scoped out the site to see what sort of progress they’ve made. I was surprised to discover they had started construction, this thing is actually going ahead. It was a lot smaller than I imagined, I would estimate the Wave Box is around 1/6th the size of Snow Planet which is about 10 minutes further north up the motorway.

Here’s a couple of photos I took in the rain.

I’ve emailed the Wave Box crew and have secured a media pass to the opening “later this year”. So I’ll be there to let the world know if this thing is a success or a failure. I sent Surfing Magazine’s “Jimmicane” a link to the Wave Box a while back and he has posted an article on the Surfing Magazine website.

There were a few alright waves around tonight but it was super cloudy. I was keeping myself entertained while walking the dog by taking photos of birds, but that damn pesky Alex Dive kept getting in the way with his vert reos.

NZ Surfing Magazine #129

received the brand new issue of NZ Surfing today.

It’s chock full of sick images from Indo, including 5 pages of my photos from the Lombok trip I did with Mikey Mallaliue and Alex Dive. The Billabong trip to Krui looks epic, and just to remind you that NZ still has world class waves there’s a Primo roady featuring perfect Raglan and Taranaki.

I also managed to get a shot of myself surfing in there, which is definitely a bonus of teaching your girlfriend how to take photos.
